Trip Details – One trip that has always been a High Plains Drifters’ favorite is the Green River below the Flaming Gorge Reservoir at Dutch John, Utah. The drive is not a short one but leaving real early Thursday you can still have a few hours of great fishing that day and then there are two full days before heading home on Sunday afternoon after a few more hours on the water. If you have never fished the Green there will be plenty of us glad to show you the water and provide advice and if you want to tag along – just ask.
The River – The Green is popular for its excellent fly fishing and is considered one of the best tail water fisheries in North America. This world-class, blue-ribbon, trout fishery is home to Browns, Rainbows, Cutthroats, and Cut-Bow Hybrid Trout. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources states the Green has between 8,000 and 22,000 fish per mile between the dam and Red Creek rapids. View River Map and Sections here. The Green flows through a scenic, steep-walled canyon. The rugged terrain allows access in only three areas: just below the dam, Little Hole and Browns Park. You can drive to those locations and fish your way up or down the stream, or float the river in a drift boat or rubber raft. The browns are wild, produced by natural reproduction, and grow quickly in the fertile water. The average fish is 15-17 inches long. Insect hatches are prolific. Scuds are a primary food source and are effective throughout the year. Midges work on and below the surface during the winter and early spring. Blue-winged olives hatch in incredible numbers in the spring.
Lodging – We reserved six condos and two motel rooms for the nights of April 25th, 26th and 27th at the Flaming Gorge Resort about a 10 minute drive from Dutch John. As of today
February 20, 2019 all spaces at the Flaming George Resort are spoken for with the possibility of maybe an opening for one or two people.
Lodging Option – If you are wanting to go and looking for a place to stay. The Dutch John Resort (435-885-3191) and Trout Creek Flies of Utah also located in Dutch John (435-885-3355) both advertise cabin rentals. Making reservations will be your responsibility and no deposit required. If you rent a cabin and are looking for a person to share the cost contact Larry to see if he has any names to share.
RV Spots – There are RV spots at the Dutch John Resort in Dutch John where HPD members have already made reservations. Call the Dutch John Resort 435-885-3191 to reserve a RV or camping spot. HPD has not reserved any spots so don’t delay. Once you have made a reservation, please contact Larry so we have a count on who is making it to the Green.
Food – Over the years we have found that gathering together each evening builds camaraderie and allows us to make plans for the next day and swap stories and techniques used that day. Thursday night for those who want to attend we will try to find a place where we can all sit down for a meal. Probably at the Dutch John Resort as they have a large area where they serve dinners – the final destination will be given before you depart for the Green. Friday and Saturday night Larry will try and see if we can do a pot luck at a location to be determined. Doing it this way helps cut costs while building life- long HPD friendships. Details regarding Friday and Saturday night dinners will follow to those signing up. Breakfast and lunch are for each of us to handle on your own.
Fishing – The Green offers excellent wade fishing in both the “A” section and the top of the “B” section. Both pontoon boats and drift boats can be rented or guides can be hired. Rentals or the hiring of a guide is up to you. Both the Flaming Gorge Resort and the Dutch John Resort can arrange for guided trips and a third shop Trout Creek Flies 435-885-3355 can also provide guides and they have an excellent fly shop. Remember you will need a Utah fishing license. https://wildlife.utah.gov/utah-licenses.html
Getting to the Green– Typically you are looking at a 6 hour ride coming in through Vernal, Utah on Hwy 191 or taking I-80 through Wyoming and then dropping down just after Rock Springs to Dutch John. If you want to drive and would like to share the ride let Larry know and he will help match you with those looking for a ride. Typically, those sharing a condo drive up together but several guys like to hit the road alone.
If You Need Help or Info call Larry at 303-793-0056 or contact at email@example.com . Thank you to Jeff Powles for the use of these pictures and proof the browns are big and healthy.
